The effortless neighbourhood

  1. Owen Welcome to Shared Ground. Our neighbourhood app has announced a wonderful new feature: you can now pay someone to attend a residents' meeting on your behalf. At last, community spirit without the inconvenience of encountering the community. I assume the next update will thank the neighbours for us.
  2. Leah Before we bury it under sarcasm, think about who can't attend. A parent working evenings might have a strong opinion about the playground and no practical way to express it. Convenience isn't automatically the enemy of participation. The question is whether this service carries someone's views into the room or simply turns an empty chair into a billable activity.
  3. Owen The company says its representative will submit your comments and send a summary afterwards. Which sounds reasonable, except that half the value of the last meeting was discovering that my original complaint was based on a misunderstanding. I arrived furious about the locked garden and left knowing the lock was broken, not that someone had secretly privatized the roses.
  4. Leah Exactly. A submitted position can't always do the work of a conversation. Still, I'd separate the useful parts of delegation from the claim that it replaces being there. A clear summary could help an absent resident contribute next time. It becomes questionable when a company sells the reassuring feeling of having participated while making no room for your opinion to change.
  5. Owen There's also a sponsored noticeboard. Businesses pay to have their announcements appear above everything else. The app calls that a more relevant local experience. Apparently relevance now has a monthly subscription. A missing cat, with its regrettably modest marketing budget, will have to develop a personal brand.
  6. Leah Funny, but the issue isn't that businesses should be silent. The cafe's notice about a free language group might matter more to residents than my photograph of a cloud. It's the invisible ranking that bothers me. If payment determines visibility, say so. Don't present a commercial decision as though the neighbourhood has collectively decided what's important.
  7. Owen Would you keep the app, then? I was ready to delete it after the third notification inviting me to celebrate the area's authentic character at a luxury apartment launch. But when the lift in our building stopped working, neighbours used it to organize shopping for people who couldn't manage the stairs. That wasn't imaginary community.
  8. Leah I'd keep it with some conditions: clear labels on paid posts, access to an unranked noticeboard, and meeting options that let people respond to one another. What I wouldn't keep is the promise that good neighbourhood life requires no effort. Technology can remove an obstacle to a relationship. It can't do the relating for you. Occasionally having to listen to someone you didn't select is rather the point.
